The Surrey Honda Story: Meet Rommel in Sales

Who:  Rommel   (pictured with the award for the 2011 winner of the Senior Sales Master for Western Canada, Honda)

What:  Sales Specialist

Bio:  Rommel has been working the showroom floor in more ways than one for the past decade.  He can be found making hundreds of customers happy when they meet their Honda match.  Rommel is more like a match maker in our eyes.  His work ethic is as unique as him.  He is also not afraid to bust out a move or two in the showroom and keeps things light and comfortable for everyone around him.  Goals driven, always there to help and amazing at knowing his customer’s needs and finding them a vehicle to match.  Did we mention, he can also be the resident comedian?

Q:  Tell us about your start here?

A:  “I was part of sales training session and there was a number of us in that class being taught by one of the top pros in Canada.  It felt more like the show, Survivor, and lets just say I won that contest when I was hired to work here.  Sales is not the easiest job but if you can find a passion for it, it becomes more than just a job.  It’s more like a mission for me these days to help my customers.”

Q:  You have been awarded top sales person in recent years and are very goal driven.  Tell us what keeps you going in this business through the ups and downs?

A:  “We all know the last couple of years have been up and down with the economy but I am a goals oriented person and everyone has a goal.  My customers goal is to get the best vehicle at the best price.  My personal mission statement is to always be consistent in everything you do, if you make a promise, follow through every step of the way.  Every customer is unique and deserves the same amount of time and effort.”

Q: Where triggered this way of thinking and working?

A:  “I learned early on in my training and it is one thing that always stuck with me – if there is ever an opportunity for a random act of kindness, do it.  Working at Surrey Honda is a great place to do that daily.”

The Surrey Honda Story: Meet Mary at the Front Desk

Who:  Mary

What:  Showroom receptionist

Bio:  Mary manages the busy front reception desk.  Working with the sales team and greeting clients are just some of the things Mary does.  It is a busy section of the showroom but she makes it run smoothly to make sure customers in store or on the phone get their questions answered in  a timely and polite manner.  This is the hub of where Surrey Honda’s great customer service practice starts.

Her Story:   Many moons ago, Mary was living on the eastcoast and decided to go the opening of the Skydome in Toronto.  She had won tickets to a Blue Jays game where they handed out baseballs in clear cases as collector’s items.  Years went by and Mary moved to the lower mainland.  A few days after getting her job at Surrey Honda that baseball in the case fell over.  As it rolled towards Mary – the Honda logo appeared on the other side of the ball.  Yup, we took it as a good sign of this was just meant to be!

Mary went to the G.M. with her story.  He had the same one.  It’s just one of the stories that makes Surrey Honda a magical place to shop for your next vehicle but also a place where you just happen to become part of our family.

The Surrey Honda Story: Meet Faizal in th Service Department

Who: Faizal

What:  Service Department Advisor

Bio:  Faizal is one of the first faces you will see smiling any day of the week when you walk into the service department.  12 years ago, he joined the Surrey Honda team and started by washing cars then joined the detailing department and now is one of the finest on the service front lines.  Five kids, hundreds of vehicles and even more customers later, his smile is just as bright and his “make every customer happy” attitude is captured by all.

His Story

Q:  In your job, you really get to know the regular Honda visitors who bring their vehicle in for service for years.  What is that like?

A:  “It’s like family.  And it starts before we open the doors each day and close down each night.  Everyone who works here takes care of each other.  From the G.M. to the washboy, we can all talk to each other like we are all family. Because we operate like a family, we treat our customers like they are family too.  We have all seen each other and our families grow up over the years.  For example, every Christmas – the kids get treated at their own party – gifts, Santa, activites and even our G.M. makes everyone pancakes.  It’s just a feel good place where everyone is caring.”

Q:  What makes the service department one of the best?

A:  “We have an open door policy.  From the automatic doors that open for drive thru service to the transparant windows on the wall between the customer waiting area and where our highly trained mechanics work- we are open with our customers.  If they have questions about the work being done on their vehicle – we can show them and that makes them feel more comfortable.  We have a huge bay and it’s easy to see it all.”

Q:  It’s a pretty comfy waiting area too – tell us more about what customers can expect in the service department?

A: “Some appointments are an hour – some shorter and others longer.  Customers have the option to hang out in the coffee shop style waiting area with fresh coffee, televisions, magazines, newspapers and free wireless or they can take advantage of our shuttle service within the vicinity and get back home, work or even the gym to use their time however they choose.  We will drive them there.  We help them make the best use of their time because we respect time is valuable to all.”

Q:  What are some things people may not know about Surrey Honda?

A:  “We are more than just selling cars.  We are your one stop shop when it comes to a vehicle.  You buy a car here but you can also come here for more afterwards.  Detailing department, simple service such as oil changes but also we have a huge selection of tires every year and in the unfortunate incident you need to repair damage done to your vehicle, we help arrange all the necessary details with body shops.  All you do is keep us in mind for ALL your car needs.  This is why we build relationships with our customers and not just sell them a car or truck.”

Tires and Tread at Surrey Honda

We have tires for every season.  From all-season to winter tires in stock with big name brands and affordable pricing.

Here are various methods to calculate winter tire wear:

Tread wear indicators
A quick, easy way is to refer to the tire‘s tread wear indicators located inside the grooves. They are bars made of hard rubber lying sideways across the tread. When the tread is flush with the wear indicators – 2/32 of an inch or 1.6 millimetre – the tire needs to be replaced since it no longer provides effective traction on snow and ice.

Pre-winter wear level

If the depth of the tread measures 6/32 of an inch (4.8 mm) before the start of winter, the tire likely won’t last a full season, or the equivalent of about 10,000 kilometres. Those who plan to stretch their rubber’s life one more season just to save money may wind up paying for a lot more than a new set of tires after months of heavy snowfalls. Not all winter tires wear out at the same speed. Snow tires will generally last longer than models designed for icy conditions. Compound quality also plays a key role in tire durability.
The quarter test
A classic way to measure winter tire wear is to use a quarter. Insert a 25¢ Canadian coin in one of the grooves with the caribou facing down. If you see the tip of its nose, it means the tread depth no longer meets 6/32 of an inch, so the tire probably won’t last all winter, or 10,000 kilometres.

Preventing premature wear
Tire pressure

Properly-inflated tires will reduce wear and save fuel. Check the tire pressure once a week if you do a lot of mileage; in any case, check at least once a month. Inflate any tire that does not meet the recommended PSIs for your vehicle. The information can be found in your owner’s manual or a specific label inside the driver’s door frame.

Tire rotation, balancing and alignment
Tires should be balanced and rotated every 10,000 kilometres in order to prevent uneven tread wear. Directional tires must be rotated on the same side of the vehicle (front-rear), while non-directional tires must be rotated to form an X (ex.: front left to rear right). Tire alignment is recommended as soon as you feel that your vehicle pulls to the left or right, or when you notice uneven tread wear.
